Application process
In order to enhance the user experience when managing childcare arrangements for a sick child, and to ensure effective tracking of which parent is responsible for caregiving, as well as to maintain a record.
Background
Vab (vård av barn) is the name of a benefit paid out to working parents when they need to stay at home to look after a sick child, or accompany them to a doctor or hospital. It's a major part of what makes Sweden a family-friendly place to work, with parents entitled to up to 120 days each year per child (on average, they take around seven per child).
Process
Phase 1: Surveys and findings
We conducted a short survey and had 16 answers in a span of 24 hours: Office workers, usually work daytime and weekdays
Findings
-
People tend to report retrospectively
-
People have trouble to remember when they VABed and when their partner VABed
-
Make it easier to find and access the functionality and information related to VAB in one place
Phase 2: Establishing the Persona(s)
Goal:

Creating a one-stop solution for VAB that decreases the time spent on reporting VAB to be less than 2 min/day so Emmelie can spend more time on things that matters most.

Phase 3: Identifying the potential pain points and opportunities
Hypothesis:

“We believe that exposing the number of VAB days taken by each parent or guardians before applying for VAB will increase equality between parents and guardians over time.”
“We believe that by enabling planning options of VAB for multiple parents/guardians and children, the user will be less prone to make mistakes such as double-booking or struggle to remember previous VAB.”
“We believe that by combining the calendar with the applying for VAB-functionality we can make it clearer for the user which days has already been applied and approved for.”
Phase 4: Ideate, an alternative approach
Focus:

-
Multi-use calendar tool
-
Ability to VAB for multiple children and occasions in one session
-
Possibility to add and plan for respective parent/guardian
